Model Minority Myth in the Therapy Room

Event Date:

August 23, 2021

Event Time:

11:00 am

In this workshop, participants will first gain an understanding of the origins of the Model Minority stereotype, who it refers to and why it is important to acknowledge and discuss today. Specifically, participants will learn about the sociopolitical context that contributed to the creation of the term “Model Minority” and how this stereotype of Asian-Americans can have a financial, psychological and even physical impact. A case vignette will  be used to facilitate dialogue on how this stereotype may present in the clinical setting and how clinicians can support their Asian-American clients with a deeper understanding of their history and lived experience in the United States today.

Objectives:

  • Define the Model Minority stereotype and describe the origin of this term.
  • Discuss the impact of this stereotype on the Asian-American community, in addition to other communities of color.
  • Have a greater awareness of the implicit biases and assumptions of Asian-American clients as a clinician and how this plays a role in the therapeutic work with this population.
  • Identify ways to create more comprehensive conceptualizations of Asian-American clients, incorporating the potential role of the Model Minority stereotype on their lives and psyche.
