Indigenous Approach to Mental Wellness

This is an interactive and reflective workshop that invites participants to connect to their personal and collective wellness. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of what a healthy, sustainable wellness practice is for them and how this also contributes to community wellness.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

1. Gain an understanding of Indigenous core values, balance, and sustainability

2. Deepen understanding of the self in relation to community

3. Identify personal strengths and how these strengths support growth of personal and community wellness

Supplies Needed

1. A blank sheet of paper

2. A pencil or pen

3. Access to full zoom controls (it’s recommended that folks be able to login from a computer or device that allows them to fully participate rather than call in)

Workshop participants who opt to receive CE certification, please select the CEU option. This workshop fulfills requirement for 1.5 CE credits. CE sponsorship is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), credits are applicable to LCSW and transferrable to LCPC in Illinois. If you have a different licensure or are licensed outside of Illinois, please check with your licensure body before purchasing.

About the Speakers

 

Monique Castro, LMFT (Diné/Mexican)

Monique Castro is a citizen of the Diné (Navajo) Nation and Mexican, born and raised on the ancestral homelands of the Tongva People (aka Los Angeles). She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, certified professional coach, social justice consultant, facilitator and advocate with over 14 years of professional experience in the areas of health, wellness, community organizing, and education. Her approach centers an Indigenous world view and core values. She is a collaborative and relational-leader with an exceptional track record building and maintaining sustainable relationships with Native-led organizations, Tribes, higher education institutions, and community members throughout California and nationally. Her leadership includes establishing the California Native Vote Project (co-founder), So’oh-Shinálí Sister Project (co-founder) and Indigenous Circle of Wellness (founder and CEO), a thriving psychotherapy private practice located in Southeast Los Angeles. Monique earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from California State University of Los Angeles (CSULA) and Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology from Mount Saint Mary’s University (MSMU) and is clinically trained in Relational Gestalt Therapy, EMDR, and other holistic approaches to wellness.

Elena Seymana Nourrie (Hopi, Cherokee, Mexican) was born and raised on traditional Tongva territory, now known as Los Angeles, CA. Elena has held professional roles within tribal organizations with specific focus on the education, visibility, equity and inclusion of Native students. She has also held roles within elementary and high school special education, private academic success and research sectors, and higher education. Elena completed her bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in Education and a minor in Psychology at Cal Poly Pomona. She also earned her master’s degree in Higher Education with an emphasis in Student Affairs from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
