Speak Up! For Your Maternal Health: Advocacy Strategies for Providers Serving BIPOC

Event Date:

October 10, 2022

Event Time:

2:00 pm

Event Description

Perinatal mental health complications and health disparities among BIPOC birthing people are major a public health concern too serious to be ignored. BIPOC communities also experience significant barriers to equitable mental and physical healthcare stemming from systematic oppression and implicit bias. Providers are in privileged positions to speak up for those they serve and therefore, should know how to advocate for the equitable care of all people. This webinar will examine the importance of provider advocacy and explore tools for teaching their client’s self-advocacy skills to promote self-efficacy.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify 3 factors that contribute to inequities in maternal healthcare for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC).
  • Proficiently discuss the importance of provider advocacy for marginalized people.
  • Know the 5 questions providers should ask BIPOC clients and why.
  • Utilize Advocacy tools such as the BIPOC Maternal Healthcare Bill of Rights to teach self-advocacy skills.
