Historical Trauma and Mental Health

Event Date:

October 21, 2021

Event Time:

1:00 pm

Clinicians need to be able to recognize and respond to treatment challenges and strengths present, perpetuated, and exacerbated by historical trauma. This interactive webinar is designed for clinicians to enhance their delivery of trauma-informed treatment with people of African descent and born in America. Professional development in trauma-informed care for mental health professionals is imperative for successful implementation of treatment modalities and engagement. This is especially true for cross-cultural treatment and communities with experiences of historical trauma.

Objectives:

Webinar participants will be able to integrate trauma-informed care into the practice of treatment conceptualization, treatment planning, and client engagement. Following the webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Realize the widespread impact of historical and complex trauma within racially segregated communities;

2. Recognize trauma responses disguised as common treatment challenges, unhealthy interpersonal skills, and other mental and health symptoms such as, but not limited to attrition, interpersonal violence, aggression, avoidance, minimization, resistance, co-dependency, opposition, shame, etc.;

3. Respond with neurobiologically-informed techniques to widen client window’s tolerance, reduce mental health symptoms, and promote healing;

4. Resist re-trauamization with use of client and family strengths, awareness of relevant cultural history, and trauma-informed treatment, programming, policies, procedures, etc.
