Decolonizing Diet Culture and Eating Disorder Treatment

Event Date:

April 9, 2022

Event Time:

10:00 am

Workshop Description

When we consider eating disorders, there are often narrow ideas of who has eating disorders, and consequent white washed recommendations for treatment. Much of this association is connected to diet culture. This interactive, three hour training focuses on creating a deeper understanding of what diet culture is, the historical development, and its intimate relationship with white supremacy. Participants will be encouraged to explore their own relationship with diet culture, and examine how this has impacted their personal and professional values systems. Participants will also be given the opportunity to dive into case conceptualizations in which they’ll practice assessment through the lens of decolonization.

Objectives

– Participants will gain an understanding of diet culture, its intimate relationship with racism, and associated psychological distress.

– Participants will build skills in conceptualizing disordered eating cases using anti-racist lens.
