Black Women and Chronic Stress (In-Person Workshop)

Event Date:

March 22, 2024

Event Time:

2:00 pm

Chronic stress is a pervasive issue affecting Black women. Black women are dealing with stressors and demands that impact their mental well-being. Statistically speaking, Black women are 20% more likely to report serious psychological distress than their white counterparts according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In addition, Black women have higher rates of poor physical health outcomes as a result of psychological stress that often goes undetected. Practitioners will learn how they can support women experiencing chronic stress on a micro and mezzo level by examining how the unique social, economic, and cultural factors impacting Black women contribute to their specific stressors.

This is an in-person workshop. The workshop will take place at the Chicago Minds coworking space located at 661 W Lake St, Suite 2S Chicago IL 60661. Light refreshments will be served.

Workshop Objectives:
  1. Understand Intersectionality: Participants will define and apply intersectionality concepts to comprehend how race and gender intersect in shaping chronic stress for Black women.
  2. Analyze Historical Context and Health Disparities: Participants will explore historical factors contributing to chronic stress and investigate health disparities, including a higher likelihood of serious psychological distress among Black women.
  3. Identify Societal Pressures and Coping Strategies: Participants will recognize societal expectations impacting Black women’s stress and explore coping strategies and resilience factors within the Black community.
  4. Apply Micro and Mezzo-Level Support Strategies: Participants will learn practical intervention strategies for practitioners on individual and mezzo levels.
